UN: Ukraine civilian casualties in 8 months of 2026 exceed all of 2025

The UN reported that in January-August 2026, at least 2,222 civilians were killed in Ukraine and 13,058 more were injured. The total number of casualties reached 15,280, exceeding the figure for the whole of 2025, when 14,656 people were recorded as affected.

The United Nations said the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine over eight months of 2026 has already exceeded the figure for the whole of 2025. According to the data, at least 2,222 civilians were killed and 13,058 were injured between January and August.

In total, the UN recorded 15,280 civilian casualties during this period. By comparison, throughout 2025 the figure stood at 14,656 people.

The deadliest months were July and August: over these two summer months, 820 people were killed and more than 5,000 were injured. The UN warns that the war is entering a "dangerous new phase," and with winter approaching, strikes on energy infrastructure pose a particular threat.
